The synthesis of semiconductor devices in microelectronics and photonics applications has always fascinated me, and the field of developing electronic and photonic solid-state devices is a field that I find continuously interesting and rewarding. The physics behind these devices and their manufacturing are consistently setting new limits or allowing for new methods that produce useful applications. By embracing and driving research, industries which rely on evolving electronic devices and methods enjoy a rapid pace of development. Because of this, we see photonic solutions proposed as an alternative to the more physical electronic devices. Moreover, we see approaches that integrate these worlds. My interest in these fields will require an extensive academic and research foundation regarding devices that rely heavily on quantum, electromagnetic and other phenomena. It will also require me to initially focus my efforts before exploring a breadth of other fields and applications that wi ll become an integral part of my research repertoire. My academic interests and career objectives span both theoretical and practice-based branches of learning. I have seen how many factors in epitaxial growth of groups III and V semiconductor materials may render a great theoretical design difficult to realize. Envision a man of the utmost integrity whose wit, determination, and sharp attentiveness leave a lasting and significant impact on countless amounts of people worldwide. Envision a man with the greatest observational and deductive skills that the world has ever seen. Envision a man whose magnificent intelligence has had the astonishing power to crack several of the greatest and most difficult crimes and mysteries ever known. Each of these remarkable features is indicative of one of the most famous literary characters to ever be created in all of literature: Sherlock Holmes. His impressive attributes are particularly highlighted in the famous 19th century short story, â€Å"A Scandal in Bohemia,† written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The story†¦show more content†¦Specifically, in the beginning of the story, Holmes’ partner, Watson, decides to visit him at his home on Baker Street for the first time in a while since his marriage. As soon as Watson enters, Holmes ob serves several different quirks in an extremely quick manner. He slyly states, â€Å"I think, Watson, that you have put on seven and a half pounds since I saw you†¦ And in practice again, I observe†¦ How do I know that you have been getting yourself very wet lately, and that you have had a most clumsy and careless servant girl?† (Doyle 3). Rebecca Nurse Goody Nurse was a highly regarded, pious pillar of the community who unfortunately could not withstand the power of hysteria. There were many reasons that Rebecca was accused, but it was mostly the hatred exhibited towards her by the Putnam family. She was against Samuel Parris as Reverend of the Salem Town Church, while the Putnam family was his friend, and her husband was at war with the Putnam family estate over some land. Rebecca exuded a saint-like presence over the dark days of the witch-hunt. After her accusation, thirty-nine of the most prominent leaders of the community signed a petition attesting to Rebeccas goodness of heart. Even one of her original accusers, Jonathan Putnam, put his name to the appeal. During her trial, Sarah Holton testified that Goody Nurse killed her husband, Benjamin, because she found his pigs in her field. In actuality, Benjamin Holton died of a heart attack three years after the pig incident. In further evidence against Nurse, Ann Putnam, Sr., whom we have already established as being unfairly biased, testified before the court. She claimed that apparitions of Goody Nurse came to her and choked her in the night while the spirit proclaimed all of the people she had killed (the list incidentally included Benjamin Holton). Fortunately, the speculative evidence against Rebecca Nurse was not substantial enough to convict her; on June 30, the jury came back with a verdict of not guilty. The afflicted children broke out in tantrums and hideous screaming fits and Chief Justice Stoughton urged the jury to reconsider. They came back with a decision of guilty.
